Springboro Library happenings

- A Gold Level Library -

SPRINGBORO - Springboro Public Library is pleased to announce that our library has earned a “Gold Star Library” designation from the PA forward Star Library Program. PA forward is a statewide initiative under the PA Library Association (PaLA), which works to strengthen the state’s libraries through education, advocacy and leadership. The program showcases and recognizes libraries that incorporate five key literacy programs into their activities, displays and events. The five literacies include: Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic and Social Literacy, Health Literacy and Financial Literacy. All of these are essential for Pennsylvanians to succeed as parents, employers, employees, students, consumers and general citizens. Look for the PA forward logos on event flyers and marketing materials.

These are fun things we do during our “Kids Create” hour every Saturday at 11 am. Our children’s corner also has puzzles, games, building blocks and other toys that encourage kids to learn.

As summer is in full swing, we are gearing our books and crafts towards summer themed activities and workshops. Currently we are featuring books on flowers, camping, boating, biking and swimming.

New adult fiction and non-fiction are always displayed at the front of the library. New best sellers this week include books by Catherine Coulter, Karen Robards and David Gordon.

“SPL” had an aromatherapy workshop on July 18th. We made bug spray from essential oils. Anyone who missed the class can stop by for the recipe or check out one of our many good books on aromatherapy or essential oils.

The summer reading program was a success! We’d like to thank all who participated and give a special shout out to our local sponsors! This year, we made up big baskets of universe inspired gifts and included tickets that were donated by Waldameer, ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum, The Erie Zoo and Carnegie Science Museum. There was also a mystery prize drawing. For each five books the kids read, they received a ticket for the drawing and prize of their choice. The kids also had activity sheets they could do as well to win a water bottle and get a yellow star to put on our wall. The teens and adults had reading challenge sheets that would earn them prizes as well and included a “constellation challenge”.

The best way to get kids to enjoy reading is by reading to them from an early age. Join us every Saturday morning at 10 am for pre-school story hour. Our story time is led by an experienced “Pre-K” teacher and coaches children for what they should expect when they go off to school for the first time. Kids learn to participate, ask questions and share adult attention. We follow story time with a fun activity and a yummy snack. Parents are encouraged to stay, observe or just enjoy the library.

On July 27th, we made moonstones for the garden! We also made E.T. creatures. These were the last of the universe inspired crafts for our Saturday “Kids Create” hour. Regular educational and seasonal crafts resume Saturdays at 11 am. Kids at pre-school age to age 12 can come participate in a fun learning oriented craft. Our children’s corner also has puzzles, games, building blocks and other toys that encourage kids to learn. Parents are welcome to participate. We ask that small children NOT be left unattended.

Our teen reading and juvenile bookshelves have the most popular authors as well as beloved classics. We are consistently updating our selection. We also have graphic novels including; the “big NATE” series and “The Baby-sitter’s Club series. Reading is great way to get teens interested in all that the world has to offer. We have teen magazines and the most popular music CDs as well.

Libraries can help Pennsylvania achieve a higher literacy rate. We continually strive to offer programs and activities which inform and educate our patrons on this ever changing world. Libraries offer programs for all ages including seniors. Keep up with all our library has to offer by following us on Facebook or our website.

Our website’s “Power Library” is great for writers as it includes references and bibliographies that you can’t get through your online research. And it will also direct you to related articles on those topics. There are also a variety of e-books by best selling authors and free access to “Universal Class” which has over 500 subjects! You can earn free CE credits with “Universal Class”. All you need is a library card.

You can also keep up with our craft workshop schedule on our website or on Facebook. We do craft workshops on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Our next workshop will be on August 15th.

Winter is not the only time to curl up by a fire with a good book. Take out a book while you are grilling on the patio. We always have just the right book.

Our new books shelves at the front of the library always include the latest arrivals in fiction and non-fiction. “Perfect pan Pizza”, “50 States 5000 Ideas”, “ipad Made Easy” and “101 organic Gardening Ideas” are just a few of the new non-fiction titles. We also have new fiction by Paul Doiron, Martin Clark and Jennifer Chiaverini.

New movies this week include, “Small Foot” and “Outlander- season 4”.

Our teen reading and juvenile bookshelves also have the most popular authors as well as beloved classics. Reading is great way to get teens off of their phones or computers and interested in all that the world has to offer. We have magazines and music to interest teens as well.

Check our website or facebook anytime for craft workshops, new movies and books. And let us know your requests.

We can also do memorials and dedications. If you have a loved one that you would like to dedicate a book to, you can have our library director order a fiction or non-fiction book. A label will be placed in the front of the book with the name and dedication. See our main desk for more information.

Remember to LIKE us on facebook and check out our website.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every child participated in summer learning, and as a result, raised literacy rates throughout the area? Children learn best when their learning is not interrupted – and summer vacation is a long interruption!

Without practice, children forget facts and important “how to” skills. The Springboro Public Library’s Summer Library Program helps children’s minds to stay active by bridging the gap between school years.

Nurturing basic literacy skills is one of the goals of PA Forward Pennsylvania Libraries, an initiative of the Pennsylvania Library Association.

Research shows that a child’s library use raises his or her fourth grade assessment scores.

Help spark learning in all of children this summer by supporting and participating in the Summer Library Program.

And remember to join us on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6 pm for craft night. We hold craft workshops regularly. There are some special ones planned during the summer reading program. Sign ups are at the main desk.

There are new music CDs also! And new magazines every month.

Remember, we have audio books to check out if reading isn’t your thing. Our rotating collections have all your favorites, best selling authors.
