Springboro Library happenings

- A Gold Level Library -

SPRINGBORO - There’s a “Universe of Stories”! There is about a week left of our summer reading program. And we are all about everything galaxy, universe, stars and planets. This program is fun for the whole family. Kids and adults who don’t think they are into reading can enjoy this yearly program just for the challenge. It is a great program that motivates kids and adults to broaden their horizons, not only through reading, but also with fun learning activities. As incentives, we have prize baskets including tickets to Waldameer, The Erie Zoo, Carnegie Science Museum and ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum. We also have a mystery prize! The program runs until July 27th.

Springboro Public Library is pleased to announce that our library has earned a “Gold Star Library” designation from the PA forward Star Library Program. PA forward is a statewide initiative under the PA Library Association (PaLA), which works to strengthen the state’s libraries through education, advocacy and leadership. The program showcases and recognizes libraries that incorporate five key literacy programs into their activities, displays and events. The five literacies include: Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic and Social Literacy, Health Literacy and Financial Literacy. All of these are essential for Pennsylvanians to succeed as parents, employers, employees, students, consumers and general citizens. Look for the PA forward logos on event flyers and marketing materials.

July 13th our kids got creative and made their own crystals. And on July 27th, we will make moonstones for the garden or yard! These are just a few of the fun things we do during our “Kids Create” hour every Saturday at 11 am. Our children’s corner also has puzzles, games, building blocks and other toys that encourage kids to learn.

We had fun on July 20, at Springboro Park during the “Celebrate Springboro Festival”. Every year the library participates with something fun for the kids at this celebration of our little, country community. We always anticipate a great turn out. And our community never disappoints!

Winter is not the only time to curl up by a fire with a good book. Take out a book while you are grilling on the patio. We always have just the right book.

Our new books shelves at the front of the library always include the latest arrivals in fiction and non-fiction. “Perfect pan Pizza”, “50 States 5000 Ideas”, “ipad Made Easy” and “101 organic Gardening Ideas” are just a few of the new non-fiction titles. We also have new fiction by Paul Doiron, Martin Clark and Jennifer Chiaverini.

New movies this week include, “Small Foot” and “Outlander- season 4”.

Our teen reading and juvenile bookshelves also have the most popular authors as well as beloved classics. Reading is great way to get teens off of their phones or computers and interested in all that the world has to offer. We have magazines and music to interest teens as well.

We enjoy our crafts here at Springboro Library! Join us for craft workshops on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 6 pm. We made all natural bug spray with essential oils at our most recent workshop. Ask at the main desk for our sign up sheet. Some of our past workshops included bead jewelry, solar lights, painted pots and other paint projects as well. We try to include a seasonal craft for each of the four seasons.

Check our website or facebook anytime for craft workshops, new movies and books. And let us know your requests.

We can also do memorials and dedications. If you have a loved one that you would like to dedicate a book to, you can have our library director order a fiction or non-fiction book. A label will be placed in the front of the book with the name and dedication. See our main desk for more information.

Remember to LIKE us on facebook and check out our website.

The website’s “power library” includes references, bibliographies and related articles on chosen topics. There are also a variety of e-books and free access to universal classes for over 500 subjects

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every child participated in summer learning, and as a result, raised literacy rates throughout the area? Children learn best when their learning is not interrupted – and summer vacation is a long interruption!

Without practice, children forget facts and important “how to” skills. The Springboro Public Library’s Summer Library Program helps children’s minds to stay active by bridging the gap between school years.

Nurturing basic literacy skills is one of the goals of PA Forward Pennsylvania Libraries, an initiative of the Pennsylvania Library Association.

Research shows that a child’s library use raises his or her fourth grade assessment scores.

Help spark learning in all of children this summer by supporting and participating in the Summer Library Program.

And remember to join us on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6 pm for craft night. We hold craft workshops regularly. There are some special ones planned during the summer reading program. Sign ups are at the main desk.

There are new music CDs also! And new magazines every month.

Remember, we have audio books to check out if reading isn’t your thing. Our rotating collections have all your favorites, best selling authors.
