CONNEAUTVILLE - As we continue to move forward through the 21st century, with all of the technological changes and advancements we have seen, it would seem that the library has become less important. Libraries in the 21st century are more than just places that hold books, they are community centers where people can come together, socialize, learn, and grow. At Stone Memorial Library, we do, of course, love our books! We have many new acquisitions to browse through, along with the classics that everyone loves. But did you know that our library provides access to other materials and services as well? We provide access to e-books, computers, internet, WiFi, magazines, audio books, DVDs, and more.
Our weekly children’s Story Time is back! Bring the kids every Tuesday morning, anytime after 10 am for a bit of socializing, playtime, crafting, interactive storytelling, and snacks, all put together by Julie Klingler. Each week we explore a new theme that is sure to please.
Our weekly Knitting and Crocheting club will be starting on Thursday, October 10, at 10 am. All skill levels are welcome to join in, socialize, and stitch! We also have a monthly book club that meets on the third Thursday of the month.
We are looking forward to offering other programs in the future for our patrons to help bring our community and its families together. If there is an item, program, or service that you would like to see in our library, please let us know. Springboro Library happenings
- A Gold Level Library -
SPRINGBORO - We have great news for “SPL” craft workshop fans. Starting this October, we will be doing crafts twice per month through the holidays! Watch for Fall themed craft workshops to make decorations for your holiday home.
On October 3rd, we had a paint workshop. Patrons were able to follow local artist, Tammy Clement, in making their own small masterpiece for Halloween. The painting workshops are very popular and we typically ask that folks sign up in advance for proper planning and seating. Check out our facebook page or our website for information on these workshops and other events.
Anyone can participate in our workshops. We encourage all to become library patrons. However, our services are here for the community and we welcome all to our workshops. Crafts are currently scheduled for 6 pm on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month through 2019. Our next workshop will be on October 17th. There will be a kid’s craft as well. Ask for the sign up sheet at our main desk.
We also do kids crafts every Saturday @ 11 am, following pre-school story hour. Kids learn to participate, ask questions and share adult attention. Our “Kids Create” hour is usually a fun craft or activity that teaches basic skills for school such as using scissors and glue. Our experienced, pre-k teacher reads a seasonal story and does a seasonal craft that kids can take home or possibly put in one of our display windows.
If you are interested in helping with our fund raising efforts, Please contact our Director, Joy. We do several fund raising dinners and sales throughout the year. Our next big event will be the annual Soup & Sandwich Supper. We will be needing lots of pies to sell. This event features homemade soups, sandwiches and pies. It is held every year the day before Thanksgiving.
Local groups or businesses can get some free recognition in December by volunteering to decorate one of our many trees that are featured in our holiday window displays. Scout troops are welcome. Call or stop by and we can reserve a tree for you. We will even set the tree up and put the lights on it for you! Just let us know if you would like white or colored lights on it. A sign will be placed under the tree with the name of the group, club or business that decorated it. Decorating starts the day after Thanksgiving.
In October, the library enjoys getting our community ready for Halloween. If you need ideas for costumes or decorating, stop by. We are always happy to guide our patrons to the right book or magazine.
And let’s not forget a good ghost story while you are here. We have a great collection, old and new, of the best ghost stories written. All ages can find and check out something fun or frightening.
Remember, all the new books are at the front of the library for easy access. This week’s new titles include: “Smoke Screen” by Iris Johansen, “Call Your Daughters Home”, by Deb Spera, “Back Lash” by Brad Thor and “This side of Night”, by J.Todd Scott.
Become familiar with our website’s “Power Library”. This is a great tool for writers and students as it includes references and bibliographies that you can’t get through your online research. And it will also direct you to related articles on those topics. There is also free access to “Universal Class” which has over 500 subjects! You can earn free CE credits with “Universal Class”. All you need is a library card.
If you have an idea for a book, movie, workshop or activity, please stop by and speak to our Library Director. We aim to provide the most current educational materials as well as entertainment media and crafts for our community.
Pre-school story hour is every Saturday morning at 10 am. Our story time is led by an experienced “Pre-K” teacher and coaches children for what they should expect when they go off to school for the first time. Kids learn to participate, ask questions and share adult attention. We follow story time with a fun activity that teaches basic skills for school such as using scissors and glue. Parents are encouraged to stay, observe or just enjoy the library, using computers, reading the paper or a magazine. We ask that small children not be left unattended.
We offer free Wi-Fi and our four computers are available to patrons. The library also subscribes to 25 different magazines as well as 2 newspapers. You can also spend an hour going through our hobby sections in the stacks or check out the latest in fiction and non-fiction.
