In my role as Art Director/Resident Artist for our regional hospital, over the past twelve years I have installed literally THOUSANDS of pieces of Artwork. The themes of these works have ranged from every type of landscape imaginable, to idolizations of nearly every facet of human nature, to quaint images which call to mind individual memories from the Past.

It is this last mentioned category into which one individual piece has MORE than stood out over the years…eliciting the most incredible number of responses and reminiscences.

EAST IS EAST, WEST IS WEST

A few years ago, as I and my wife were returning from a day shopping, we decided to abandon the route of our usual return, and drive through the Linesville area, and eventually cross over to Espyville. Since that day the purpose of our journey was to drive to the Presque Isle Peninsula to capture some exciting photographic images, we both had our cameras in our possession that late afternoon.

Driving through the main street of Linesville, for some (then) unknown reason, I decided to stop and gather an image of a well-known sign which adorned a corner building in town. That building, was slated for demolition in the “near future.”

Having memories of my childhood with Mom and Dad, I could fondly remember days when Dad would drive over to the town and always point-out that sign to me. One might say that those memories are what prompted me that afternoon to pause and shoot an image of that beloved sign…an image that would have widespread remarkable results in the Future.

You might have guessed! The sign to which I refer pointed the direction to both Chicago AND to New York. The distance to each of these designated venues was listed as 500 Miles…thus determining that Linesville could be noted as the center of this specific “Universe.”

We stopped. I parked the vehicle…grabbed my camera…and stood on the sidewalk immediately across the street from the building upon which the sign was attached.

Focus carefully…adjust for the proper amount of light…capture the image…CLICK, CLICK.

Little did I know at that particular moment, that the building demolition would occur the very next day!

Later that evening, I “unloaded” the images taken that day onto my computer.

WHAT SHALL I CHOOSE?

Currently, my responsibilities include the installation of over 400 pieces of Artwork EVERY MONTH throughout the hospital! SO…usually, I scramble to choose images which would (I believe) elicit the deepest forms of relaxation and interest.

Hmmmm…what to choose, what to choose?

YEP, that’s it! The image I shot of that Linesville sign would fit the need. However, the CHICAGO/NEW YORK sign was worthy of more than a simple 13 inch by 19 inch print. I made the decision to print a 2 foot by 4 foot image of the sign, frame it out, and install it in a major corridor of the hospital.

WOW!!!

Shortly after the installation of my finished image, I was contacted by SEVERAL individuals within nearly every department of the hospital. Each inquiry had as its basis the question: “George, do you know what happened to that sign? Where is it now?” Until recently, I could not correctly answer those questions. Now, however, thanks to a hospital friend, I have discovered that the sign still exists, and where it “resides.”

My framed image “made its way” from one department to another for MONTHS. Everybody wanted to have it displayed in their particular area. Now, the original large print of my work resides in the Human Resources Department…I doubt whether it will EVER move on!

ON ANOTHER NOTE

As many folks know, I have been a morning guest on one of our regional radio stations for the past several years. I first began on the Dave Hanahan Morning Show, relaying information about upcoming events throughout our Region.

After Dave left us to journey with the stars of Heaven, I began the same retinue on the Morning Show with Lon Wilson. This second “assignment” lasted for quite some time.

Recently, I was invited back to the station to have a weekly spot with Sue Vidoni every Thursday afternoon on her broadcast. My role is to represent the historic Meadville Market House.

FLASHBACK

“OK, Georgie, it’s time to turn-off your radio and get some sleep.”

Sure Mom, as soon as this last song is over. As the indicated melody faded, and the announcer’s voice indicated the Time, I would turn-off my turquoise plastic transistor Motorola radio, and crawl under the covers. The sound of the anouncer’s voice would echo in my ears as I drifted slowly into sleep.

“This is WVCC, the Voice of Linesville, wishing you all a goodnight, and pleasant dreams.”

WVCC…the former name of the station upon which I am an invited speaker!

The announcer’s voice still reverberates in my ears. The CHICGO/NEW YORK sign still exists.

AND, LINESVILE? It has, and will ALWAYS, be Much MORE than Wonderful!!!

Now, from where did that Voice of Linesville broadcast??? HMMMMM…..

I’d sit alone and watch your light

My only friend through teenage nights

And everything I had to know

I heard it on my radio
