David Schaef update: (12/05/23)

I spoke with David yesterday. He had just arrived at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Erie.

There are still a couple of issues to resolve, and David is optimistic that Encompass has the skills. We didn't speak much of medicine and health, most of the conversation was about our subscribers and the Community News newspaper.

I was much encouraged by the tone of his voice and the idea he was interested in talking about Community News. So, he’s at that, “I want to get back to work” stage of healing.

He talked about his subscribers and a letter he is composing for them. He talked about how to proceed with the newspaper when he gets home.

He said he hopes to be home in 2 weeks.

Thank You all for your Love and Prayers and Well Wishes.

Conneaut School openings reported “eerily smooth”
Written by David Shaef

The opening of schools in the Conneaut School District on Wednesday, Sept. 2, for the 2020-21 year was reported to have gone smoothly and with little to no problems as students and staff adapted to wearing masks and observing social distancing in this COVID-19 pandemic year.

Work during the summer by staff, administrators, bus company, and custodial workers among others were cited when the Conneaut School Board met in work session Wednesday, Sept, 2, at the Alice Shafer Annex.

Each of the principals at the two elementary schools, the two middle schools and the high school gave a report of the opening day, senior high school principal David Maskery saying it was so good to have students back in the building.

Students had not been in classes since March 12 when the state closed all state public schools due to the COVID-19 virus.

Valley Elementary principal Dr. Adam Jardina noted that there were several students who arrived at the school, who had been slated to be in cyber school but last minute decisions were made to return those students to the brick and mortar setup. Jardina said they were easily taken care as part of preparations in planning to open schools.

Summit buying new back hoe at cost $123,000+, less trade-in
Written by Roseanne Staab

The Summit Township Board of Supervisors met for the September public meeting with Bill Agnew, Lud Zarembinski, and Jerauld Smith in attendance. Secretary Brenda Braden took the minutes and there were 9 citizens present.

For Public Comment, a man read from a letter he wrote, addressing the Board about his neighbor on Harmonsburg Road. The neighbor is a local farmer. The man had bought a house, and he is alleging that the farmer/neighbor is dumping debris and junk right at the property line on his yard.

He would like to sell the house now, but is alleging that this farmer is causing an eyesore with the junk. Some trees were blown over on the farmer’s property, due to a wind storm, and these have been left laying right on the property line.

The man stated that his real estate deals are falling through due to the behavior of his neighbor.

The man further alleged that his neighbor is dumping food scraps at the edge of the property line, thus drawing in wild animals and vermin.

The man further alleged that this same neighbor is throwing rocks into his yard, and had removed a wooden fence but left the stubs of posts.

Sadsbury leaders angry over fire funds given to neighboring township VFD
Written by Roseanne Staab

Sadsbury Township held the August public meeting with Supervisors Kevin VanHonk, Lyle Hoovler, and Bonnie Smith in attendance. Secretary Rose Mumau took the minutes and there were 10 citizens present. All stood to salute the American flag.

Supervisor Lyle Hoovler made announcement during the meeting expressing his disappointment and disgust at the late, now-defunct Conneaut Lake Park Volunteer Fire Department in its dispersing of the funds remaining in CLP VFD Relief Association.

Hoovler, with VanHonk and Smith concurring, noted that the funds have been transferred to the Summit Township Volunteer Fire Department in Harmonsburg

As required by law, when a fire department goes non-solvent or defunct, the remaining monetary funds must be dispersed to another viable entity.

Sadsbury Township has always donated money to the CLP VFD. The Foreign Fire Relief Funds have always been divided equally between Conneaut Lake VFD and Conneaut Lake Park VFD in the past in the 50/50 split. Other invoices were paid, and Workman’s Comp always diligently followed.

The Conneaut Lake VFD got nothing from the now-defunct CLP VFD Relief Association and this Sadsbury Township Board is disappointed with that news.

Said Hoovler, “Why didn’t the money from CLP VFD stay here in Sadsbury Township, since we always donated to CLP VFD? This is despicable.”
