David Schaef update: (12/05/23)

I spoke with David yesterday. He had just arrived at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Erie.

There are still a couple of issues to resolve, and David is optimistic that Encompass has the skills. We didn't speak much of medicine and health, most of the conversation was about our subscribers and the Community News newspaper.

I was much encouraged by the tone of his voice and the idea he was interested in talking about Community News. So, he’s at that, “I want to get back to work” stage of healing.

He talked about his subscribers and a letter he is composing for them. He talked about how to proceed with the newspaper when he gets home.

He said he hopes to be home in 2 weeks.

Thank You all for your Love and Prayers and Well Wishes.

It's a go - school sports, schools opening September 2
Written by David Shaef

Schools in the Conneaut School District will open on Wed., September 2, for the 2020-21 school year, large numbers of students trekking back after schools closed in mid March and did not reopen.

Meanwhile, based on a vote by the Conneaut School Board of Education, fall sports practices have begin with scheduled games and other events approved to begin Thursday, September 17.

Various teams had begun practices, or were wrapping up summer open gyms.

Dozens and dozens of residents and students turned out for the special school board meeting held Monday, August 24, at the Alice Schafer Annex as all District 10 PIAA schools had been asked to meet and vote on whether to have fall sports with PA governor Tom Wolf urging no fall sports programs due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic and the state’s high school athletic association, PIAA, voting to allow fall sports programs to proceed with the caveat that local school boards make the final decision.

Every school district in the local PIAA District 10 region of Crawford County, Erie County, Mercer County, Venango County and Warren County, with the exception of Tidioute Charter in Warren County, voted over the past week or so to allow fall sports programs to go on.

A major PIAA District, #12, in the Philadelphia area, voted not to have fall sports programs take place this year.

Various options included moving fall sports to spring time, much like some of the major college conferences.

20 people addressed the Conneaut Board at its special meeting August 24, split between parents and several athletes - all urging allowing fall sports programs to take place.

Parent Lance Hearn said he understood the decision to be made would be in the best interest of the students. He also said he would stay at home so his student could play - referring to current state rules that no more than 250 people could attend an outdoor event [football, for example] and indoor events be capped at 25 in attendance which includes players, coaches, officials, etc.
