David Schaef update: (12/05/23)

I spoke with David yesterday. He had just arrived at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Erie.

There are still a couple of issues to resolve, and David is optimistic that Encompass has the skills. We didn't speak much of medicine and health, most of the conversation was about our subscribers and the Community News newspaper.

I was much encouraged by the tone of his voice and the idea he was interested in talking about Community News. So, he’s at that, “I want to get back to work” stage of healing.

He talked about his subscribers and a letter he is composing for them. He talked about how to proceed with the newspaper when he gets home.

He said he hopes to be home in 2 weeks.

Thank You all for your Love and Prayers and Well Wishes.

Student numbers continue falling in school district
Written by David Shaef

Student numbers continued falling in the Conneaut School District in the recently completed 2018-2019 as end of school numbers for June 2019 were listed at 1,865. That was a drop of 38 from third day enrollment in August of 2018.

While the 38 does not seem like many for a year’s time, the 1,865 is 709 less than the 180 day figures of the 2008 - 2009 year, 10 years ago.

In the 180 day breakdown for 2018 - 2019, the 180 day figure showed 348 students in K - 4 at Conneaut Lake Elementary, and 306 at Conneaut Valley Elementary.

There were 328 students in grades 5 - 8 at Conneaut Lake Middle School and 257 at Conneaut Valley Middle School.

Health of Conneaut Lake meeting topic for Saturday
Written by David Shaef

The Conneaut Lake Aquatic Management Association (CLAMA) will be hosting a talk on improving the health and water quality of Conneaut Lake.

It is no secret that the economic well-being of the communities around Conneaut Lake is tied directly to the health of the lake. Without a clean lake the community suffers.

The municipalities around the lake, as well as the community have an obligation to improve and protect the water quality and condition of the lake to ensure strong visitor numbers and property values now and into the future.

The talk will be held at the Iroquois Boating & Fishing Club, 10733 Konneyaut Trail, Conneaut Lake, at 10 am Saturday, July 13.

Dr. Milt Ostrofsky will present “Why Phosphorus?: A brief history of eutrophication research”.
