Finding Beauty

One January morning my son called me to his bedroom and pointed out a gorgeous orange and pink sunrise. His bedroom faces east. I was in my living room at the time, which faces west. All I saw were gray-blue clouds on the horizon. But in the east, a stunning sunrise, blue sky, and puffy white clouds greeted the morning.

The ominous clouds to the west portended a rainy, gray day. Looking west obscured the beauty in the east. All I had to do was turn around to see God’s handiwork. David wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:1 NIV) My son showed me a positive view instead of a negative one.

There is beauty in every day of our lives. Sometimes we have to search for it, but we’ll find it if we’re looking. The snow on March 2, 7, and 8 made my yard a winter wonderland. My hemlocks, quince bush, and dogwood sparkled in the snow.

There are few things more beautiful in my sight than quince and dogwood blossoms. These gorgeous trees bloom in spring, which lies ahead. I long to see these flowers, but I thank God that I recognize the beauty of the snow now. I hope the Lord helps you notice something beautiful today.

If you’re looking for things to keep you busy over the next few weeks, here are a couple ideas.

Jamestown Presbyterian is hosting an adult spelling bee on March 17, at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free and a complimentary dessert bar is included. Contestants are sponsored at $50 per person, and all funds will be donated to the youth group’s Alaska mission trip. The winner of the spelling bee will be awarded a $100 prize.

Jamestown Presbyterian’s youth group is also selling Challah, a traditional Jewish bread, from noon to 4 p.m. on March 24, at the church. It will be baked freshly all day. Proceeds will also benefit the youth group’s mission trip to Alaska.

Looking ahead, Dr. Michael Poke will be preaching at evangelistic services at Fallowfield United Methodist from April 25 through the 27, starting at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Poke is pastor at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in West Virginia. He preached at Fallowfield in 2007 and 2008. He is a dynamic, encouraging, and inspiring minister.

Dr. Fred Monk will also be speaking. Pastor Monk was our minister from 1998 through 2009. He is a strong Bible teacher with a gentle shepherd’s demeanor.

Fallowfield’s choir and praise ensemble will provide special music. Our current minister, Pastor Larry Corner, and Allen Jacobs, a Fallowfield church member, will also be singing. Everyone is invited, regardless of church affiliation or lack thereof.

Have a wonderful week. Blessings!
