Smart electric meters causing concerns

Area residents over the past several months received notices from their electric companies that their current mechanical type electric meters would be replaced by Smart meters, as required by Pa. Act 129 of 2008, which was said to be aimed at reducing electrical use.
As the smart meters have been installed, a number of users are seeing electric bills that have shown huge jumps in costs.
The advantage of the smart meters is that meter readers will no longer be required in that the meters will be able to be read by sending data wirelessly.
According to Aaron Ruegg, a spokesman for First Energy, quoted elsewhere is that smart meters/readers simply record the amount of electricity used.
Yet, reports filter in of increased bills and a blog out of Jamestown, PA, show many paying more for their use of electric.
