David Schaef update: (12/05/23)

I spoke with David yesterday. He had just arrived at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Erie.

There are still a couple of issues to resolve, and David is optimistic that Encompass has the skills. We didn't speak much of medicine and health, most of the conversation was about our subscribers and the Community News newspaper.

I was much encouraged by the tone of his voice and the idea he was interested in talking about Community News. So, he’s at that, “I want to get back to work” stage of healing.

He talked about his subscribers and a letter he is composing for them. He talked about how to proceed with the newspaper when he gets home.

He said he hopes to be home in 2 weeks.

Thank You all for your Love and Prayers and Well Wishes.

Although a decision on whether there should be one middle school or continue to have two half full middle schools in the Conneaut School District won’t be made until sometime this fall, it appears that some on the current school board want to re-invent the wheel and go to a full blown look at school setup, transportation, and more.

Conneaut School Board president Dot Luckock said at the board’s Wednesday night voting meeting that discussion would take place at an upcoming work session as to whether there ought to be committees setup like there were when the school district looked at, and ended up, with its current setup - a single high school, two middle schools, and two elementary schools.

When that occurred a half dozen years ago, many setups were looked at and examined and facts and figures gathered with that including two high schools, keeping three elementary schools and high schools, a single 10 - 12 high school with one junior high of 7 - 9, among others.

Luckock also said maybe there would be a board committee of the whole to look at the upcoming decision, basically the facts and figures already there for update and re-examination.

Had the school board made the decision for a single grades 10 - 12 high school, a grades 7 - 9 junior high, and keeping the three elementary schools in their local communities, this current look at whether there should be a single middle school or two half full middle schools, with maybe moving 5th grade back to the two current elementary schools, would not be necessary. Projected savings were said to be better than the plan actually put in place, and was the plan championed by former school board member David Schaef, who said this middle school issue would come up in 5 - 6 years.
