David Schaef update: (12/05/23)

I spoke with David yesterday. He had just arrived at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Erie.

There are still a couple of issues to resolve, and David is optimistic that Encompass has the skills. We didn't speak much of medicine and health, most of the conversation was about our subscribers and the Community News newspaper.

I was much encouraged by the tone of his voice and the idea he was interested in talking about Community News. So, he’s at that, “I want to get back to work” stage of healing.

He talked about his subscribers and a letter he is composing for them. He talked about how to proceed with the newspaper when he gets home.

He said he hopes to be home in 2 weeks.

Thank You all for your Love and Prayers and Well Wishes.

School board approves free meals for all K - 12 students
Written by David Shaef

It’s official! The Conneaut School Board has approved trying a meal program in the Conneaut Schools in which no student has to pay for a meal be it lunch, breakfast, or after school as they go to practices, away games, whatever without having a chance to go home.

The board also approved a budget to begin the July 1, with no tax increase although there is a deficit just under $350,000 which can be taken out of the fund balance.

The meal program - and it is for meals, not A La Carte items - passed on a 7-1 vote, with John Burnham absent. Voting yes were Don Ellis, Jr., Jamie Hornstein, Kevin Jacobs, Kathy Klink, Eric McGuirk, Dot Luckock, and Tim McQuiston. Vo-ting no was Theressa Miller who said she thought the program was wonderful but had concerns about not reaching a break even point.

Conneaut Business Manager Greg Mayle indicated in offering the proposal a week ago that student participation must increase in order to have a successful program.

Springboro secretary court case delayed to September term council leader reports
Written by David Shaef

When Springboro Borough council met Monday, June 10, they learned from council president Joe Yates, that former secretary Michelle Phillips’ case has been delayed to the September term of Crawford County court proceedings.

Yates said Phillips’ attorney asked for time to review the audit report. Yates also said the borough would not see any reimbursement “until next time.”

Phillips has been accused of using borough funds for personal uses while she served as borough secretary.

Her court date was originally set for the May term of court.

Yates was joined at the June council meeting by Mike Furdiga, Bill Garlick, Sonny Gabel, Jim Groves, and Jim Glaspy, with councilwoman Carol Pittsenbarger absent. Mayor Tammy Rowland was also present along with 4 visitors.
