David Schaef update: (12/05/23)

I spoke with David yesterday. He had just arrived at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Erie.

There are still a couple of issues to resolve, and David is optimistic that Encompass has the skills. We didn't speak much of medicine and health, most of the conversation was about our subscribers and the Community News newspaper.

I was much encouraged by the tone of his voice and the idea he was interested in talking about Community News. So, he’s at that, “I want to get back to work” stage of healing.

He talked about his subscribers and a letter he is composing for them. He talked about how to proceed with the newspaper when he gets home.

He said he hopes to be home in 2 weeks.

Thank You all for your Love and Prayers and Well Wishes.

Springboro’s former borough secretary waived her preliminary hearing and will go to criminal trial in Crawford County Court that she allegedly stole $92,328 in borough monies over a time period dating back to January 2014 through March of 2018.

Michelle [Shelly] Phillips, of 12262 Harmonsburg Road, waived her right to a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Rita Marwood at the Linesville-based court on Tuesday, January 29.

Phillips was ordered held for trial when she waived her hearing and will appear in county court in May.

Eight counts of theft by deception, three counts of theft by failing to make disposition of funds, and two counts of unauthorized use of an automatic teller machine have been alleged with 12 counts noted as third degree felonies and one count noted as a first degree misdemeanor. The third degree charges carry a maximum of 7 years in prison on each count plus a $15,000 fine; the first degree maximum is 5 years in jail and $10,000 fine - all if convicted.

The $92,328 was determined after Springboro Borough Council obtained the services of HBK CPAs & Consultants who did a forensic audit of borough finances, along with investigative work done by State Police.

CV Lions hosts dinner, awards ceremony
Written by Roseanne Staab

The Conneaut Valley Lions Club recently held their annual Christmas dinner and scholarship awards ceremony at The Station in downtown Conneautville.

King Lion, Don Wheaton, welcomed the 25 people in attendance, giving a brief history and mission statement of CV Lions and the international organization of Lions Clubs. The CV Lions Club was established in 1947 as the Springboro and Vicinity Lions Club. Later the name was changed to Conneaut Valley Lions Club, and is situated within District # 14-F.

International started in 1917, and is known for working with eye disorders and blindness in the human population. One of their goals is to permanently end preventable eye blindness worldwide.

The motto of Lions International is “We Serve,” and all donations to the CV Lions Club go directly to benefit worthy causes such as vision and blindness associations, hearing research foundations, leader dog and leader puppy training, and libraries, among many others.

Administrative costs are paid for by local members, not through any donations made by the public.
