Crawford County Fair Preparations

Welcome to another week!

Fallowfield United Methodist Church’s pie committee plans on picking 125 pounds of blueberries on July 18. Why? Because it’s time to get ready for the Crawford County Fair. The Fair begins August 20 and ends August 27. The first pie make of the Fair season is July 25, at 5 p.m. We usually make around 200 pies, then freeze them. We’ll bake these during the fair week.

We will also make and freeze pies on August 1, 8, and 15 at 5 p.m. These typically last two or three hours.

This year we’ll be making all the old favorites: elderberry, apple, Dutch apple, blueberry, blackberry, strawberry-rhubarb, rhubarb, raisin, lemon meringue, coconut cream, peach, cherry, and summer harvest. Summer harvest is a mix of cherry, peach, and blueberry. It’s a great seller.

We divide all net profits among missionaries and charities.

If you’d like to donate your time, we’d love to have your help at the church or the pie booth. Fair shifts are from 10:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. until closing. We usually close around 9 p.m. Friends and community members always help us achieve our goal. Our church couldn’t do this project without help from our community.

Pie bakes are at 6 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, and Monday, August 22, through Friday, August 26. We have one last bake at 6 a.m. on the 27th, and then clean up the church. We typically make between 1,700 and 2,000 pies during Fair week.

If you’re curious about quantities of pie ingredients, here are some quick figures. We usually use around 850 pounds of flour, 500 pounds of sugar, 360 pounds of Crisco, 50 pounds of coconut, 185 pounds of blackberries, around 200 pounds of cherries, eight bushels of apples, eight bushels of peaches, and much more.

We’re very excited to see elderberries growing well this summer. We gratefully accept donations of elderberries and rhubarb. Please contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots.
