Outreach in Fallowfield

Welcome to another week! How did you fare during the torrential rains on May 31? Liberty Street in downtown Jamestown was closed because of flooding. I was wowed by the work the Greene Township Roadmaster did in repairing County Line and Haun Roads. Rain washed out a culvert on County Line Road and gouged six-inch ruts into berms on Haun Road. I was shocked by the flooding and the damage it did. I can’t imagine living in hurricane country.

My pastor, the Reverend Dave Bell, retired this week. June 7 was his last Sunday at Fallowfield United Methodist Church. I will miss Pastor Dave. We had a farewell tureen dinner for him Sunday night. We will welcome Pastor Larry Corner and his wife, Cindy, on Sunday, July 5.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) planning is in full swing at Fallowfield United Methodist. VBS will be June 22 through 26 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. We are using SonSpark Labs curriculum this year. It’s all about showing how Bible stories verify scientific laws. For example, the first lesson is about creation, and shows that God created the law of gravity.

VBS volunteers work very hard to reach the kids in the Atlantic community. This one of the main outreach programs at Fallowfield United Methodist. Many of these kids never go to church. All the exposure they have to Jesus is during VBS. It breaks my heart and motivates me to do my best to teach kids about God at VBS. I teach music class. We usually have 70 to 100 kids come each year.

Each night the kids can expect a Bible story, crafts, outdoor games, songs about Jesus, and snacks. We always have a boys versus girls challenge to raise money for a charity. This year we are raising money to support Arun and Sobha Massey’s mission, Caring Hands. It is an orphanage for the children of devadasis, temple prostitutes.

The Massey’s orphanage also doubles as a school for the kids and their moms. They teach the former prostitutes tailoring so they can earn money without selling themselves. The Masseys make sure each child and mother learns about Jesus’ love for them and that he offers hope for today and the future. They recently opened a home and for the devadasis’ sons.

The building that houses the orphanage was originally donated to the Masseys. But the donor recently gave notice that he needs to sell the building. The Masseys are trying to raise money to buy the house themselves. This is where the kids’ nickels and dimes will go.
