What Should We Do During Holy Week?

Welcome to another week!

Did children parade around your church’s sanctuary on Palm Sunday? Fallowfield United Methodist Church’s children marched around the sanctuary waving palm leaves. It must have been thrilling to witness Jesus riding into Jerusalem while children and adults praised his name.

Jesus spent Sunday night in Bethany. I imagine him staying at Lazarus, Mary, and Martha’s house. I have no Biblical record to base this on, but it seems possible.

He went to Jerusalem on Monday, cursed the fig tree, and cleansed the temple. He taught in the temple on Tuesday. He instituted the Last Supper on Thursday, went to the cross Friday, and rose from the dead on Sunday.

Only creation week included as many important events in history as did that first Holy Week.

My emotions churn when I think about Jesus’ last days. Jesus never sinned, but he agonized and died in the worst way imaginable. The unjustness of this hits me like a sucker punch in the gut every time I think it.

It makes me wonder how Jesus would want me to spend my time the week before Easter. I don’t know for sure, but I think it’s appropriate to read the Bible’s accounts of his death.

I think he would want me to pray for those who suffer and to ask Christ to forgive my sins.

Christians are supposed to devote time to Bible reading, prayer, and acts of service in their daily lives. This is especially true during this week, when we reflect on the most important event in world history: Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Attending worship services throughout Holy Week is an easy way to center your thoughts on Jesus. Pastor Dave Bell of Fallowfield United Methodist will lead the final service in his Lenten worship series on Wednesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. He will dramatize an artisan’s role in the crucifixion.

Pastor Bell will conduct a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. on April 17, and a Good Friday service at 7 p.m. Both will be held at Fallowfield United Methodist.

You are also invited to Kennard United Methodist church at 7 a.m. for Easter Sunrise service and to Fallowfield United Methodist’s worship service at 9 a.m. Pastor Dave Bell will lead these services.

Expect altars adorned with daffodils, hydrangeas, lilies, tulips, and hyacinths. The intoxicating scents and beautiful colors will remind you that Jesus defeated death and brings new life to all who believe in him.

Have a wonderful week. Blessings!
