David Schaef update: (12/05/23)

I spoke with David yesterday. He had just arrived at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Erie.

There are still a couple of issues to resolve, and David is optimistic that Encompass has the skills. We didn't speak much of medicine and health, most of the conversation was about our subscribers and the Community News newspaper.

I was much encouraged by the tone of his voice and the idea he was interested in talking about Community News. So, he’s at that, “I want to get back to work” stage of healing.

He talked about his subscribers and a letter he is composing for them. He talked about how to proceed with the newspaper when he gets home.

He said he hopes to be home in 2 weeks.

Thank You all for your Love and Prayers and Well Wishes.

School 2016-17 budget uncertain
Written by David Schaef

Work to prepare a budget for the upcoming 2016-17 school year that begins July 1, is a quagmire of uncertainty and question marks for the Conneaut School District.

How do you prepare a budget for the upcoming year when you don’t know what you have in the current one as the Conneaut School District, like all school districts in the state, await word as to what money they are actually getting in this year’s budget and what formulas may be used to determine support in next year’s setup.

The state budget remains incomplete since July 1, 2015, and the governor presented a preliminary plan just days ago looking ahead to the one supposed to start this July 1.

“Appalling,” school board member David Schaef said about the state budget process when school directors met in voting session Wednesday evening, noting reports that state representatives were going home last week while the budget remains up in the air.

Sadsbury supervisors, regional police unhappy with PennDOT plowing
Written by Roseanne Staab and David Schaef

The Sadsbury Township supervisors, meeting in monthly session February 9 and the Conneaut Lake Regional Police Commission, meeting recently, had the same complaint regarding what they see as the poor plowing of Route 6 between the Conneaut Lake Middle School and the Conneaut Area Senior High School.

That stretch of road is poorly plowed township supervisor Lyle Hoovler said at the township meeting, an opinion he echoed from the police meeting.

He pointed out that other state roads in the near area are much better kept, noting his worry that with the high school located in Linesville, many high school students drive that stretch of road on school days.

It is not that the students are bad drivers, Hoovler said, but they are inexperienced on icy and snow covered roads.
