Fall and the Five Senses

Welcome to another week!

Wasn’t last week beautiful? I can hardly believe how much sunshine we’ve gotten this summer. I’ve gotten used to seeing the sun every day, which is bizarre. If I were a meteorologist, I’d say there’s a 50 percent chance of rain (or snow) every day in the Atlantic community.

If you’re a bargain hunter, why not stop by Kennard United Methodist Church? They’re hosting a rummage sale on Friday, September 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. They’re having a dollar bag day on Saturday, September 26, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Wednesday is the first day of fall. Cooler temperatures are such a relief after the stifling heat of summer. Fall is a beautiful season. For me, fall is all about the five senses. Orange, red, and yellow leaves dress trees up like celebrities. Fire bushes turn red and remind people why they planted them in the first place. Corn stalks and pumpkins flank doorsteps while gourds decorate tables. It’s all so cozy-looking.

As thrilling as the sights are, the scents of fall are my second favorite. The smell of smoke from burning leaves tops my list. But I love the smell of pumpkin spiced candles, sachets, potpourri, and anything baked with cinnamon and nutmeg. Mmm…it’s just so homey and soothing and inviting.

The sounds of fall make me happy: the crunching of leaves as I walk and the plunking of acorns on roads make me smile.

Of course, eating pumpkin spiced foods is almost as good as smelling them. I love stirring warm, unpasteurized cider (that pasteurized stuff just isn’t cider, folks) with a cinnamon stick. Nothing pairs better with spiced cider than pumpkin. Pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cookies – they’re all good.

Feeling cool air kiss my face as I leave the house refreshes me. Fall is spectacular.

I hope you’ll find time to sip some spiced cider and soak in the sights, sounds, scents, and crisp air of fall.

Have a wonderful week. Blessings!
