I’m Already Thinking About Pies

Welcome to another week!

I hope you enjoyed the sunshine early last week and survived the rain later in the week. I was hoping for a sunny summer and lots of opportunities to swim. But I can’t control the weather. At least it’s not beastly hot outside.

Fallowfield United Methodist Church welcomed our new pastor, the Reverend Larry Corner, his wife, Cindy, and son, Nathan, with a tureen dinner after church on Sunday, July 12. Our sister church, Kennard United Methodist, joined us for worship and Sunday school, then stayed for the picnic. It’s always fun to spend time with our church family.

Wesbury is hosting its 26th annual chicken barbecue and craft fair on Sunday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can buy barbecued chicken or baby back ribs. Fallowfield United Methodist Wo-men always provide homemade pies for the event. Everyone who attends says it’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

I can’t believe it, but we’re only two weeks away from our first pre-fair pie make. Fallowfield United Methodist’s congregation bands together with Kennard United Methodist, members of other local churches and friends to make and sell homemade pies at the Crawford County Fair. This will be our church’s 60th year.

The late Tom Shearer, who was instrumental in the church’s first year at the fair, once told me that since we started selling pies in 1956, that was technically our first year, making 2015 our 60th. He was such a smart man.

Our first pie make will be on Monday, July 27. We typically start at 5 p.m. Some women show up early, and men are always welcome to come. We usually make apple, peach, rhubarb, and strawberry-rhubarb pies, and pie crusts. We don’t bake any pies until fair week, though.

If you’d like to help us, we’d definitely appreciate it. Just show up and we’ll give you a job. Jobs vary between rolling crusts, stirring pie filling, dotting pies with margarine, fluting crust, and bagging pies. You don’t have to be an experienced baker.

We will have pie makes on August 3, 10, and 17, too. This year’s fair runs from August 22 through 29. As always, all net profits from the fair project will support local and foreign missions.

Have a wonderful week. Blessings!
