Old-Fashioned Fun

Welcome to another week! I can’t believe it snowed last Wednesday and Thursday. Daffodils should never be snow-covered.

Fallowfield United Methodist Church held an old-fashioned hymn sing on Sunday, April 19. The church was packed. We sang our hearts out as we worshipped in song. Choir members from Fallowfield and Kennard United Methodist and Hartstown Presbyterian Churches performed, as did two soloists. It was so well-attended that it made me ponder the hearts of church goers in general.

I think I can break down worshippers into two groups. The first wants a church family where they know and can count on everyone. They want a fifteen-minute sermon, love the old hymns, and attend Sunday school.

The second group wants a large church, a Bible-based sermon, and praise and worship songs. They don’t truly want to get involved in the church; they simply want to worship. The churches that are growing in our community are the latter type. The former are shrinking.

My church is one of the former. Most churches in our community are denominational, traditional houses of worship. Some of the thriving churches are nondenominational.

Maybe our community wants to stay as old-fashioned as possible. Maybe traditional worship services fit the tone of our area. Maybe that’s okay.

Kennard United Methodist hosted a spring craft sale Saturday, April 18. I counted nine vendors. People sold handmade jewelry and wood carvings, homemade baked goods, fresh local honey, and other handicrafts.

Ladies from Kennard made corn chowder, vegetable, stuffed pepper, and cabbage soups. Raspberry and peanut butter pies, hoagies, and beverages were for sale, too.

Here’s the best part: soup cost $1.50 per bowl. Locals understand what people in the Atlantic community can afford.

Atlantic Friends & Flower Club is having a plant auction on Monday, May 4, at 6 p.m. at the Grange/Odd Fellows Hall in Atlantic. Refreshments will be available. This is always a popular event for local gardeners. Get there early.

Have a wonderful week. Blessings!
