National 4-H Week

Welcome to another week!

National 4-H Week is October 5 through 11. The Atlantic community’s Make, Bake, and Create group wrapped up its year on Saturday, September 13. They baked dozens of cookies for the Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute in Meadville. Their hope was that patients and family members could enjoy cookies while at the center.

Make, Bake, and Create is a family living and non-animal program. When people think of 4-H, they probably think of animals. But many children over the past hundred-plus years have learned many other skills through 4-H. The main goal of 4-H is to learn by doing.

The core of Make, Bake, and Create is baking and sewing, but woodworking was also offered. Like baking and sewing, woodworking is a life-long skill. The group hopes to expand its woodworking program in 2015.

4-H is the largest youth development organization in the United States. Six million American children participate in 4-H. I have seen 4-Hers become more confident as a result of what they’ve learned this year. My daughter, for one, has gained a lot of skill in the art of baking. She can now use a sewing machine with minimal supervision, too.

I am so grateful to leaders Stacy Gerber, Sharon Shrock, Barb Saulsbery, and Marie Schlosser for the time and skill they shared with Atlantic area children this spring and summer.

The Annual Fallowfield School Reunion is Saturday, October 4,, at 1 p.m. Anyone who attended the school is invited, along with a guest. Expect a home cooked dinner, conversation, and a guest speaker.

Have a wonderful week. Blessings!
