Gary Hanna Pennsylvania enters Athletic Trainers Society’s Hall of Fame

Welcome to another week!

I hope you’re enjoying the gorgeous weather. We’ve had a true spring in the Atlantic Community: lots of rain interspersed with beautiful blue skies, sweet, fresh breezes, and bright sunshine.

Frances Sperry’s family is planning her 90th birthday party on Monday, June 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fallowfield United Methodist Church. The Sperry family will perform a concert. Frances’ children are all wonderful singers. Two of her daughters, Faith and Christine, sing professionally at churches in Florida and New York City.

They’ve also planned a songfest for everyone. You are invited and I hope to see you there.

If you don’t know Frances, she is an amazing woman. She has visited all seven continents and traveled on mission trips to Ethiopia, where she helped establish a chicken raising ministry. She makes wonderful pie crust, sings in Fallowfield United Methodist’s choir, has served on the church’s mission board, is a Bible scholar, and helped her late husband, Raymond, run Sperry Farms for many years.

I’m sure it will be a great party.

Former Atlantic community member Chuck Morian is also celebrating his 90th birthday this month.

We have a celebrity in the Atlantic community. Former Atlantic community resident Gary Hanna will enter the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Society’s Hall of Fame on June 13. He now lives in Greenville and commutes to Edinboro State University where he serves as is the head athletic trainer. Hanna has worked at Edinboro since 1990.

Hanna wrestled in high school and college and is still active in the sport. Hanna served on the NCAA wrestling task force on weight management from 1998 to 2001. Two weeks after the Pennsylvania Athletic Society’s ceremony Hanna will accept the National Athletic Trainers Association’s Athletic Trainers Service Award. Way to go, Gary!

Fallowfield United Methodist Church held the annual United Methodist Women’s Day Apart service on May 21. Fallowfield United Methodist Women served a Continental breakfast to the 30 attendees.

The keynote speaker attends Johnstown First United Methodist Church. She spoke about Gypsies in Europe and emphasized the mission work the United Methodist Church is doing to help them. Gypsies are people without a home or country. Gypsies originally came from India. In World War II they were persecuted just as Jews were. Even today they are not accepted in any community or school.

The women had a quiet time for 15 minutes to pray after the keynote address.

Fallowfield United Methodist Women served a luncheon of rolls, beverage, and relish trays. Conferees brought salads.

The 2014-2015 Dairy Princess Pageant was held at Fallowfield United Methodist on May 23. Fallowfield United Methodist Women served 48 meals to committee members and contestants.

The 2014-2015 Dairy Princess is Alyssa Angelo. She is a junior at Cambridge Springs High School. Gwen Anderson of Atlantic and Katie Waddell of Townville served as masters of ceremony to a packed house. There was an ice cream social after pageant.

The Atlantic Grange is having a blood drive Wednesday, June 8, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the International Order of Odd Fellows Hall. Please call Virginia Shields at (814) 382-8584 to schedule an appointment. Grange members will provide rides to the blood drive. If you need a ride please call Virginia Shields.

All God’s blessings.
