Primary Elections and Memorial Day in the Atlantic Community

Welcome to another week!

Tuesday, May 20, is primary election day. Five men are running for State Representative in District 17 of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Gary Temple, Parke Wentling, David George Biros, Patrick James Gehrlein" and Edward Franz are competing for Michele Brooks’ seat in the Republican primary.

Democrats Dennis Patrick Webber and Wayne Hanson are also vying for the opportunity to represent the Atlantic community, along with the rest of the district.

District 17 includes parts of Crawford, Mercer, Erie, and Lawrence Counties.

I always pray over my ballot before and after voting. Following politics and elections is stressful. I make sure I vote for candidates who subscribe to my beliefs and have solid plans for the future.

Please vote. It’s only been 90 years since all Americans, including women, blacks, and American Indians could vote. I hope you will exercise your freedom.

Monday, May 26, is Memorial Day. I find this a puzzling holiday. It was created as a day to honor soldiers who died during the American Civil War. It is now officially a day to honor our military dead.

Most people celebrate Memorial Day with picnics. Many consider it a day for honoring veterans at parades and services at cemeteries.

As with most American holidays, there is a lot of confusion surrounding the day. However you celebrate it, I hope you take time to thank God for our freedoms and for our veterans.

There will be a Memorial Day service at 12:45 p.m. at Rocky Glen Cemetery in Adamsville. Pastor David Bell of Fallowfield United Methodist Church will be the keynote speaker. Pastor Bell is a veteran and an inspiring speaker. I hope you can attend.

Have a wonderful week. Blessings!
