Lent in Fallowfield

Welcome to another week!

It’s spring in Pennsylvania: Sunny and clear one day and blowing snow the next. I’ve heard that Pennsylvania is the only state in the union that experiences all four seasons in one day.

Pastor Dave Bell will lead Lenten worship services at Fallowfield United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. on March 26, April 2, 9, and 16. He is acting out a series of skits focusing on artisans whose wares played a role in Jesus’ crucifixion.

Calvary United Methodist Church of Greenville is hosting a Lenten Luncheon Wednesday, March 26. Barbara Davis and William Hulbert will provide entertainment and First United Methodist Women will host the luncheon. The speaker is the Reverend Geraldine Williams of Ruth AME Zion Church in Sharon.

One way to honor the Lord during the Lent is through song. Music has a way of putting life into perspective. I love hymns of the Lenten season. One of my favorites is “All Glory Laud and Honor” by Theodulph of Orleans. This ancient hymn was written around the year 800 and set to music by Melchior Teschner around 1613. The lyrics are compelling and inspiring:

“All glory, laud and honor / To Thee, Redeemer, King, / To whom the lips of children/ Made sweet hosannas ring: / Thou art the King of Israel, / Thou David’s royal Son, / Who in the Lord’s name comest, / The King and blessed One!”

This is a Palm Sunday song, but I think it’s appropriate to remember throughout Lent that while Good Friday is part of the season, so are Palm Sunday and Easter. Yes, Jesus suffered and died, but he also rode into Jerusalem while children serenaded him and rose from the dead, fulfilling the greatest miracle the world has ever seen.

Have a wonderful week. Blessings!
