David Schaef update: (12/05/23)

I spoke with David yesterday. He had just arrived at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Erie.

There are still a couple of issues to resolve, and David is optimistic that Encompass has the skills. We didn't speak much of medicine and health, most of the conversation was about our subscribers and the Community News newspaper.

I was much encouraged by the tone of his voice and the idea he was interested in talking about Community News. So, he’s at that, “I want to get back to work” stage of healing.

He talked about his subscribers and a letter he is composing for them. He talked about how to proceed with the newspaper when he gets home.

He said he hopes to be home in 2 weeks.

Thank You all for your Love and Prayers and Well Wishes.

Despite over two dozen people in attendance and a 4 page petition opposing increasing real estate millage by 3 mills, Linesville Borough Council, on a 6-1 vote, determined to raise real estate taxes 3 mills in the 2015 budget - all to be used to pay for the tear down of the Pachuk Building on the borough’s main street.

The 3 mills amounts to about a 25% increase and comes on the heels of a 2.2 mill increase for the 2013 budget - a 5.2 mill increase in three years, that a 50% increase from the 10 mills in 2012.

The vote to increase the 3 mills of taxes came after 2-1/2 hours of debate from those in attendance and council with Rodney Kovisto making the motion for the increase, seconded by Holly Miller and passed 6-1 with Kovisto, Miller, Kevin McGrath, Laura Deal, Mike Heaney, and Tom Deighton voting yes and Randy Uplinger voting no.

The 3 mill increase is expected to bring in about $30,000 a year as one mill is said to bring in about $10,000.
