My Rooster “Peefutz”

I had a chicken as a pet,
A gift from a favorite aunt.
He took over policing our yard
One day you could, next day he’d rant.

He spent most of his time in an apple tree
Where he could survey his domain.
He was selective with his approval.
Strangers weren’t treated the same.

One day our priest paid a visit,
Somehow Peefutz wasn’t aware.
The good father wasn’t expecting a reception
Of a flogging chicken in his hair!

You might guess what the main item
On next day’s dinner would be?
There spread out on a platter
Was what yesterday had meant much to me.

I’ve had many pets in my lifetime,
But none could ever replace
That gift from a favorite aunt
Who met the good father face-to-face..
