Memory Play

By lamplight we ate our supper
Grandpa talked of the day to come
We knew the work that lay before us
Would take from early morn 'til setting sun.

That is what my childhood days were made of
Time that came and went too fast
Times that can only be recaptured
In the golden memories of the past.

Now here today I sit and wonder
At the changes times has wrought
And shed a tear for old time values
That in modern times have been forgot.

I look ahead at my tomorrows
I have a fear there are too few
Instead of thousands I count in hundreds
These precious days I've still to do.

So as I face the days before me
And long for simpler times and ways
I know I can make each day much better
With knowledge gleaned from my yesterdays.

To be continued
