Linesville police chief retires following contract dispute Print E-mail

Linesville Police Chief George Davis retired from his position following a contract dispute discussed at a special meeting of the Linesville Borough Council held Tuesday, June 29.

Police contracts in the borough have typically followed 3-year time frames with Davis asking for a 4-year pact that would get him to age 65 and retirement into Medicare insurance plans

Council sought a 1-year contract which apparently was not acceptable to Davis, who then put in his retirement now.

Council agreed to pay for Davis’ insurance costs until he does reach age 65 even thought he is retiring from the force.

Council hired former part-time Linesville police officer David Overman on a 30 hour week to oversee the police force for now.

Two police officers are working part-time and are certified. There are two others seeking certification.

In another matter, the borough streets worker has been terminated from his position when questions arose about use of a borough gas card.

Dan Whalen, water and sewer superintendent, will take over those streets related duties with council talking about hiring a part-time helper to assist him. both Whalen and the streets worker have been fulltime employees.

Council, on a Ron Harper motion, at an earlier June meeting voted to pay the borough employees $20 a month for use of their personal cell phones with the understanding they would be on 24 hours a day in event of an emergency need. Council would then not pay for a separate phone for the employees.

Council also noted they paid off on May 20 the PennVest loan on the current sewer plant in the amount of $18,000 with the early payoff saving several thousands of dollars.
