The Conneaut School Board of Directors adopted a resolution urging the Pennsylvania General Assembly to approve a 2009 - 2010 state budget that maintains the State’s commitment of adequate and equitable basic education funding when school directors met recently.

The state has not yet approved a state budget for the year that began July 1, despite state law that requires such action. School boards must, by law, have budgets in place prior to July 1, or lose authority to spend money.

When Conneaut School Directors adopted their 2009 - 2010 budget in June, they could only guess at what the state funding might be.

Asked how long the school district could go without receiving state payments - two have already been missed - Conneaut School District Business Manager Joe Yeager reported the district could go until mid-November, but after that may have to consider borrowing funds to meet its obligations.

Since the school board meeting of September 9, it has been reported that state leaders have agreed on a budget but final details are still being worked out and no final action has been taken.

Should funds to education be cut back at the state level, the local taxpayer would have to carry the burden as the taxpayer does now. State supported studies indicate the state is not doing its share in covering educational costs in the state.

In other school board action, directors approved paid and unpaid military leave for Conneaut Lake High School teacher John Amato through June 11, 2010, and Linesville High School teacher Richard Krankota, also through June 11, 2010.
