Meeting in special session Thursday, Nov. 19, the Conneaut School Board approved the hiring of a new Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Jarrin Sperry, who lives in the Centerville area of Crawford County.

Sperry, who is not related to current school board president Jody Sperry, has worked as an elementary school principal the last five years, Oct. 3, 2005 - present, at Waterford Elementary School in the Fort LeBouef School District in neighboring Erie County.

Prior to that he spent a year as an elementary principal in the Corry School District, Aug. 1, 2004, to Sept. 30, 2005, at Concord Elementary School.

He was a teacher in the Corry School District from 1998 - 2004. He graduated from Corry High School and then attended Edinboro University earning his Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. He went on to earn his principal’s certification at Edinboro and then his superintendent's certification there as well. He is pursuing a Ph.D in instructional systems at Penn State University.

He was one of 13 who applied to fill the position that Wendy Szallay held, but who is now Substitute Superintendent at Conneaut.

Szallay will become Superintendent of Conneaut Schools on Dec. 1, her substitute position good for November as she fills in for Richard Rossi, who is retiring effective Nov. 30, and is currently taking vacation days.

The vote to hire Jarrin Sperry came on a David Schaef motion with Schaef joined in the vote by Dr. Carol Bocan, Gina Mattera McCauley, Cheryl Krachkowski, Rick Kelly and Dr. Walt Thomas. Lora Zill and Lorri Drumm were absent. Sperry’s first work day is unknown. He was given a 5-year contract.
