The figures are in on a repair and update of the facilities surrounding the football fields in the Conneaut School District and despite comments elsewhere they do not include a stadiums or stadium.

It is a study detailing costs of repairs to bleachers, light poles, and speaker systems among other items and also includes a cost if the school district would decide to use one field for its football teams where now there are two teams - Conneaut Valley and Linesville.

When the study began, there were three teams, with Conneaut Lake just recently merged into the Linesville High School program as lack of numbers of players between the two schools were addressed.

At last reports, as given at the Conneaut School Board work session Wednesday evening, there are over 50 players out for the summer conditioning program at Linesville and that most likely the school will have to name a traveling squad to match number of uniforms available.

In fairness, however, the study prepared by the district's architects, is listed as a Stadium Grandstands Study. Architect is L.R. Kimbell with a main objective of the study a review to assess conditions of existing grandstands, develop options and outline next steps to include enhancing grandstand safety, security and code compliance.

The architects noted at all three locations that it appears ongoing repairs and modifications have kept grandstands in a functioning condition.

Conneaut Lake's bleachers show signs of corrosion throughout, are in poor condition, and do not adequately address fall protection. the football field does not a 15-foot safety area and has several foot drop on the home side of the field.

Conneaut Valley bleachers, likewise, are in poor condition, lacks the 15-foot safety area, framing shows signs of corrosion and there is visible evidence the bleachers are anchored to concrete foundations.

At Linesville, bleachers show corrosion, there is no visible evidence of being anchored in concrete and, like the other schools, show seating and walkways having loose and warped planks.

Recommendation at Lake would be repair/replace bleachers, put all bleachers on the home side and might range in costs from $317,500 to $445,500.

At Valley, repairing/replacing bleachers could run from $250,000 to $344,500 and would put all bleachers on the home side

At Linesville, repair/replacing bleachers with all bleachers moved to the home side, would range in costs from $240,000 to $335,475.

Limited space at Lake and Valley sites would preclude the sites being used as a single site in the district

Should the decision be to have all teams play at one site, the best choice would be Linesville.

The field could be shifted southward to allow for bleachers on both sides of the field, allow for handicapped parking and seating along with proper access to the bleachers, something all three fields need now. Any plan could be phased in over time, the Linesville site plan including a concession/rest room facility, new scoreboard, and new lighting [again another area needed soon at all three fields].

The one Linesville site could include an artificial turf option estimated at $1-million with 1/3 of that cost in drainage.

Original comments have been to use leftover construction money for field repairs/updates, not general tax money.

The study is now tabled until decisions are made on future configuration of the schools.
