As she promised to do, Conneaut Lake Borough resident Pat Lace attended the August Borough Council meeting. Lace had announced several months ago that she would be at all of the meetings until some kind of conclusion was reached concerning a water problem that she is having on her property.

She first approached Borough Council several months ago with some complaints about the drainage system in general in her neighborhood. She lives on High Street which, according to some in attendance, has a history of high water issues during and after storms.

Council President Richard Holabaugh is also a resident of High Street and mentioned his own waterlogged conditions as well.

In the past, Lace and one other resident of High Street, had alluded to the new construction at Sheetz and the Rite Aid being a catalyst in terms of the water.

It had been explained to them that both businesses had followed the storm water management plan to a tee and it was also imparted to the ladies that in the case of the Rite Aid, the water run off actually goes into an underground holding tank that then slowly releases it.

Lace requested that borough officials take some sort of action and Council said that the engineer, Ashley Porter, would have to be involved in assessing the situation.

This did unfold prior to the August meeting and the results, according to Council Solicitor Jeff Millin, were that all was in order in terms of the drainage in the neighboring businesses and in the area as a whole.

Millin said that Porter had told him that Council should not take any kind of action of an official nature since everything had panned out in his research. In fact, Porter had said that if anything, the new construction had actually made the drainage issues better, rather than worse, since the businesses had to follow the storm water management plan and were inspected on various occasions.

Lace's main question was whose responsibility it was to fix the drainage problem. Millin reiterated what Porter had said which was that the borough had properly enforced all of the requirements and had no responsibility for anything else.

Lace also wanted to obtain some sort of map to ascertain where she would be able to pump water out accordingly and not run into any sort of underground issues in doing so.

Holabaugh said it would be no problem to show her where the drainage is, etc.

He also said that if they had the money to do so, they would love to fix all of the water problems throughout but simply couldn't afford to do that and have now basically been told, by Porter, to have a hands off policy.

In other business, another individual, Bill Deeter of Meadville, came forward with some complaints and ideas for the beach area.

Deeter is a dock renter at Fireman's Beach and explained that although he is not a Conneaut Lake resident, he had a legitimate gripe concerning the security at the facility.

Evidently, in recent weeks, there has been some unsavory activity taking place at the beach including the theft of ropes, motors, life jackets and gas.

Boats have also been untied and have drifted into the lake and swim area sometimes hitting other boats along the way.
