As we trudge our way through yet another snowy day, the Pymatuning sun looks bleak and pale, barely peeking out from behind a dark curtain of mysterious clouds. The resident bald eagles are seeing hard times, as the lake is frozen over, cutting off the supply of fresh fish. Instead, they can be seen in snowy fields, reduced to scavenging for their supper. The Linesville Spillway is a winter home for a flock of Canada geese, crippled during the hunting season. They beg for bread and corn from caring citizens who have noticed their plight, on the island side near the old railroad bed. Rumor has it that a new Spay and Neuter Clinic for Cats will be opening in Andover, OH, across from the Dairy Queen. Keep your ears open for a grand opening, they will be spaying Dogs, as well as Cats, and will provide grooming services, as well. Checking out the Pymatuning Lake Association website, it appears that no new information has been posted since May of 2010. It still has information from 2009, and no new tournaments or events planned for 2011. Not sure what is happening there. Noting the passing of several local residents, including Maxine Bunnell, age 96. Maxine was a long time Espyville resident, once owning Bunnell’s gas station and general store, where the current Lakeside General now sits. Her late husband, Freddie, would pump gasoline from antique gas pumps that had the glass reservoirs on top, with little colored balls floating around inside. When we lived in the downtown Espyville area, we would walk to Bunnell’s store and buy penny candy. Actually, you could get 3 or 4 pieces of candy for a penny. There were hard wood floors, big, glass cases just full of candy, and big register grates for heating. Freddie Bunnell died in 1972 and the store was sold to the Ralph Renfro, Sr. Family, from West Virginia. Currently, the business is known as Lakeside General, home to the famous "Bomb," a sumptuous sandwich of corned beef, coleslaw, french fries and sauce, all on a baked sub bun. They also have a great selection of pizza and subs, sticky buns, potato chips and pop. Also noting the passing of Shirley Clark, long time Board member of the South Shenango Crime Watch. Shirley could be seen every month at the Crime Watch Board table, at the township buildings on Collins Road or Linn Road, talking with local citizens or enjoying a cup of coffee with them after the meeting. She was very astute on township law, particularly zoning and maintenance ordinances, and attended regular South Shenango Supervisor meetings. Shirley was quick to smile and liked to laugh. She had missed the annual Crime Watch Halloween Party in October, up at the NST Community Center and her friends passed out the candy themselves. It is always nice to have people who speak up for what is right, and Shirley always spoke her mind on what she felt was right for local citizens and government. She would always help this reporter if I had questions on what took place at the meetings, even loaning me her tape recording one time to clarify some issues. We had a good laugh when we discovered that both sides of the tape were blank; we never did find out what happened. She is going to be sadly missed by everyone at all the meetings. The Espyville All-Boys Coffee Klatch, which meets every Wednesday morning at a local Espyville restaurant, is somewhat slow this time of year. Snow birds have flown, and Juan Valdez’s mule is out in a green pasture somewhere warm, leaving a few stragglers to enjoy a cup o’Joe alone in the Espyville winter. I just know that 7 is a lucky number, our Steelers sure did us proud and by the time this edition of the Buzz is on the news stand, they will be in Big D, preparing for battle. The Steel Curtain will rise as the voice of Myron Cope can be heard once again, talking sports, as fans scream, "YOI!!" To say, "Yins are awesome!!" is the understatement of the season and many-a-glass of Iron City Beer will be hoisted in toast and reverence to the boys in Black and Gold. That big Sa-Boom! that you heard last weekend was Karen the Cougar giving a mighty roar of excitement as she realized where they were headed for the 8th time, now tied with Dallas for number of trips to the Super Bowl. Karen the Cougar is planning her own Super Bowl party at the trailer in Espyville, for herself and her beau, TommyBoy. She thinks tuna and egg with sauce, a side of Shad roe, topped off with white milk should fortify the two at least until half time. TommyBoy dresses up for all occasions, wearing a black tuxedo with white gloves; he always wears the same thing to every party. The mo-jo is started and the candles are lit, the terrible towels are on our heads and an entire city will go down on bended knee in the 4th quarter to pray and rally for a Steeler-tacular win. The local economy should receive a boost, also, with this post-season gala-rama. Atop a wave of Steeler mania, I’m closing for this week from Espyville, where the people are friendlier, the fish are bigger, the beer is colder, the cows give more milk and old Steeler fans never die. Keep the snow off your bumper and the ice off your tail. Thanks for reading the Espyville Buzz and keep on buying the Community News. Leaving you with the immortal sounds of the Glenn Miller Band and a little "Moonlight Serenade," sponsored by Chesterfields. |
