Hello, you Espyvillians!

Look at autumn setting in; our small, country hamlet is relaxing after a busy tourist season into a beautiful array of gold, orange and purple, topped of with brilliant blues skies and puffy clouds.

A cloudburst or two never spoils the view so get ready for the sun to ignite the scenery for one of the best times of the year.

The sunsets are incredible, why don’t you take a drive in the evening down to the Espyville Marina and see it all out on the pier?

Remember to check out Italian Night at Li’l Bit; the sauce is to die for and the portions are the size of Glenn Linn’s bean field. There is pie for dessert and you’ll probably have to take some home for later.

The Espyville All-Boys Coffee Klatch, which meets every Wednesday morning at a local restaurant, had their usual rendezvous over steaming mugs o’ Joe.

These movers and shakers like to discuss local bird populations at Pymatuning, flight patterns of the waterfowl and harvest amounts coming out of the fields, and they don’t mind when their wives tag along.

Remember the annual Halloween Party down at the NST Community Center, sponsored by N. and S. Shenango Crime Watch and the Community Center on October 31, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Candy stalls are still available, call Tony Durnye at (814) 683-5923 or Jeff Daniels at (724) 927- 6666 for reservations.

October 2 to 9 was National Fire Prevention Week, with a focus on home smoke alarms.

The theme is, "Smoke Alarms, a Sound You can Live With."

NFPA, Official Sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for nearly 90 years, has designated this year’s campaign to educate people about the importance of smoke alarms.

They are encouraging everyone to take the necessary steps to update and maintain their home smoke alarm protection.

Check your smoke alarm today.

Remember to check out the website for 17 House at www.17house.org. It has recently been updated so take a look-see for all the latest calls and events from everyone’s favorite Firefighters.

I even found this great chili recipe this week on one of their links.

The change of seasons is upon us; try this one out at home over a football game:

Firehouse Chile con Carne:

8 servings

1 Tbl. spoon vegetable oil

1 Lg. Yellow onion, diced

2 ? lbs. Ground beef

3 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 cup chile powder (ancho)

1 Tbl. spoon ground cumin

1 Tsp. spoon black pepper

? Tsp. spoon chipotle pepper

1/4 Tsp. spoon cayenne pepper

1 Tsp. spoon dried oregano

1 Tsp. spoon sugar

1 Lg. green bell pepper, diced

1 lg. red bell pepper, diced

1 can tomato sauce, 15 oz.

2 Tbl. spoons tomato paste

3 cups water, or more to suit

1 can pinto beans, 15 oz., drained, not rinsed

1 can kidney beans, 1 oz., drained, not rinsed

Suicide version: Add one sliced habenero pepper in a spiceball for 30 minutes, remove.

Directions:

Add vegetable oil and onions to a Dutch oven or heavy pot. Place over med-high heat and saute for 5 minutes or until the onion softens.

Add the ground beef and cook 10 minutes, break with a wooden spoon.

Add garlic, chili powder, groundcumin, black pepper, chipotle

pepper, cayenne, oregano, sugar,

Cook and stir for 2 minutes.

Add bell peppers, tomato sauce and paste and water.

Bring to a nice simmer, then reduce heat to med low and cook uncovered for 60 minutes, stirring occasionally.

After 60 minutes, stir in the beans and simmer for another 30 minutes. May more water to adjust thickness.

Our October Happy Birthdays go out to Roberta Hamill on the 6th, Bobby Vickery on the 7th, Dave White on the 19th, Flo Morrow on the 21st and Susie Kline on the 26th.

Maureen "Red" Gehring and husband Jim were spotted recently watching the Steeler’s game at Pelican 2, in their usual spot, Shrine in place; good to see them out supporting the Steel Curtain.

Karen the Cougar had to be pried off of her Steeler’s fleece last weekend; the loss of the game was inexcusable to her and she’s blaming Jeff Reid for the whole thing.

If he had made those two field goals, we would have won.

It’s enough to drive any die-hard fan to drink and the sound of grown men crying in their beers could be heard all the way to Smoky City.

Brian helped her dry her little kitty eyes with the edge of the fleece, and told her not to fret because Big Ben is coming back.

The defense looked a little slow and every missed tackle came back to haunt them all, ending their undefeated streak like a dying specter slipping into the torn-up turf.

Season’s just starting and Pittsburgh’s lucky star is rising, so man your sofa and keep the Iron City ready, they’re sure to be back.

Stick around in Espyville, folks, where the people are friendlier, the fish are bigger, the cows give more milk, the beer is colder and old Steeler fans never die.

Keep the rain off your bumper and the mud off your tail.

Thanks for reading the Espyville Buzz and keep on buying the Community News.
