Hello, Luckily, this week, I got a question from Laura who wrote: “Hi, I enjoy your articles in the Community News. You appear a lot calmer than your Mom. My husband's grandparents gave him a coin. (My husband is 70.) The coin is good shape, but it has been circulated. It is a one cent piece dated 1851. Do you have any idea what it is worth? Thank You, Laura

First of all, Laura, thank you for the question. As for the mother thing, I think you are quite right.

I'm sorry I didn't answer this last time but, your email ended up lost in the world of my spam and I just recently found it.

To now answer your question, from what I can tell, the coin is an 1851 Coronet Braided Hair Large Cent. (I am sending in a picture to be published and you can see if it looks like your coin.)

Here is some information about the coin that I found at: coinoftheday.blogspot.com.

  • Circulation strikes: 9,889,707
  • Designer: Christian Gobrecht
  • Diameter: ±27 millimeters
  • Metal content: Copper - 100%
  • Weight: ±10.89 grams
  • Edge: Plain
  • Mintmark: None
  • Value: $0.18 (G-4) up to $275.00 (MS-63)

I am going to list some other values which depend on the grade of your coin. In Good Condition, your coin could be worth $23; in Very Good, $26; in Fine Condition, $29; in Very Fine, $34; in Extremely Fine, it could go for $59 and in MS-60, it could go for $165 and up, depending.

Keep in mind that these are just estimates and the prices could fluctuate depending on many factors.

Well, thank you again for the question and thank you for reading Coin Corner too.

Here is the picture I mentioned earlier.
