You may think that reading a column written by a cat is useless But, I am writing this week’s column to convince you that it is not. I know. I don’t write about deep things. I don’t know about deep things. Maybe that is why I am so enjoyable. I am therapeutic. And, that is why I write these columns. I like to make people happy. I see my mama and those around me. The Humans. We cats watch you. And, that is why I decided to write. I wanted you remind you of things. Of the things that life sometimes makes you forget. Like orange juice in the morning. The morning paper. I could purr on about more things, but you would probably think I was being dramatic. I do have a flair for drama. Anyway, simple things. These are the things I enjoy with my mama - excluding the coffee, of course - which I think sometimes you guys forget about. Am I right? Sometimes, I wonder what you Humans are doing all the time! Boy! The activity! I don’t understand Humanity of course. How could I? I do learn things from mama. I listen to her and I listen to the people she talks to and I learn. I learn from Larry King and the people he talks to. That’s where I heard about Tiger. And I watch news stations and read the newspaper. But you are not easy to understand. You are very complicated. Sometimes, I talk to Reggie, the squirrel. And, to Boo Boo. And to my other friends when I see them. Other cats who come to visit on occasion. My landlords bring their cats sometimes to stay with us and I go over there to watch them while they go on short vacations. We visit. I talk to them. And, we all agree. You are complicated. We are simple. We like you. Don’t misunderstand. I think we bring out the best in you. You treat us like royalty. You treat us better than you treat each other! I see you getting mad at each other sometimes. But, you never get mad at us. Even when we do things wrong. Like when I knock the water glass off the table and send it flying across the room. Or, when Boo Boo tears up Little mama’s papers. Or when I steal mama’s necklaces and drag them around the house and hide them. Spill her coffee. Bite her fingers while she is trying to type. You laugh. We can do no wrong. When a kid does this, he gets his butt spanked. Or gets sent to his room. We animals have a special place in your hearts. And, I am very happy about this. I guess I am babbling. But I know why you read my column. Because you don’t have to think. You can smile. You can enjoy life as I do. You can imagine how it would be to get up and eat. Walk around a bit. Play a while. Read the paper. Eat again. And crawl back into bed and snooze for your morning nap. Then, get up again. Eat. Play a while. Go out on the porch and meditate. Play hide and go seek with Boo Boo. Smell the fresh air and flowers. Hear the birds. Look at that magnificent sky. So blue with crisp white clouds. Watch people walk by. Cars. Talk to Reggie for a bit. Then, come in and crawl into your condo and snooze for your afternoon nap. Get up. Watch TV for a while. Eat. Play. Evenings are busier. We play harder. With our mouse. Mama bought this round thing with a play mouse under it that goes round and round. Boo Boo and I chase it every night. Then “American Idol” comes on a couple of nights a week. We watch that while mama quilts. Can you believe that Lilly got sent home? She was so good. That was a mistake. Then I watch Larry King. Because he has so many different guests and I learn a lot from them. Then, a bit of news. I doze on mama’s lap. But, with one ear and one eye, I listen and watch the news and learn what is happening in your world. Then, back to slumber land again. To await the next day. To rise. And eat. And play. And snooze. And eat. And play. And snooze. I also like to run like the wind down the hallway. Boo Boo and I sound like a herd of horses. I learned this sound from watching “Little House on the Prairie.” The horses were all running at once and the sound woke me up from a deep sleep. That is how I knew about horses in herds. I woke up and watched. And listened and learned. I race down that hall like you wouldn’t believe! With Boo Boo on my butt. Chasing me. To where? To nowhere. There is no place to go, so we go up and down the hall. We pretend we are cowboys and indians. Or, like I said. Horses. Maybe chasing a bank robber or something. Like on “Bonanza.” Boy, oh boy, do we ever enjoy life! And, sometimes, I feel sorry for you. Because I don’t think you enjoy life this much. I know you have to work to feed me, but, I think maybe you could enjoy life a bit more. Take the time out of your busy life to have a little more fun? The moral of this story? Enjoy the little things more. Take the time. They are here for all of us. And free. |
